Job description:


PhD Student (m/f/d) on the topic of "Correlative microscopy of aerosol particles"


As member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center’s focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.


The Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research conducts basic and applied research for a wide range of topics, including ion beam based modification and analysis of materials, 2D materials, and nanoparticles.


As part of the Institute, the Department of Ion Beam Analysis invites applications as PhD student (m/f/d) on the topic of "Correlative microscopy of aerosol particles".


The position will be available from 1st August 2020. The employment contract is limited to three years.


The position is embedded in the international partnering project CROSSING with the Institute "Jozef Stefan" in Ljubljana, Slovenia.


Tasks:


# development of ion beam based imaging methods for chemical and structural analysis of aerosol particles
# application of ion micro beam analysis, Helium ion microscopy and MeV SIMS for the characterisation of aerosols
# working in cooperation with our partners at the Institute "Jozef Stefan" in an interdisciplinary project on correlative microscopy


Requirements:


# very good university degree (Master/Diploma) in physics, applied physics, materials science or nanotechnology
# hands-on experience with UHV systems, data acquisition and spectroscopy methods
# preferable experience in materials science and characterization, ion beam physics, ion beam analysis, surface science and analysis
# ability to independent and self-motivated work
# very good communication and technical writing competence
# excellent written and oral communication skills in English
# readiness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team
