A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center’s focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.


At the Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay scientists specializing in medicine, physics, biology and IT work together to substantially improve the treatment of cancer by administering radiation therapy that is biologically personalized and technically optimized.


As part of the Institute, the Department of Image-guided Radiooncology, invites applications as PhD Student (m/f/d) – lntegration of MRI into treatment delivery and response evaluation.


The position will be available from 1st January 2020. The employment contract is limited to three years.


Tasks:


# Project description: MR-guided radiation therapy has been proposed as an innovative method to combine excellent-quality soft-tissue anatomical and functional imaging with high-precision radiation dose delivery. This applies to the currently available systems integrating an MRI and a linear accelerator, and in the future possible to MR-integrated particle therapy. This project will investigate the potential to use multiparametric MRI for the detection of treatment-related changes of the tumor and its surrounding tissues occurring during the course of fractionated radiotherapy, and for those changes occurring during follow-up. For this, the acquisition and longitudinal analysis of MR scans is compulsory making use of advanced image analysis methods.The position should result in a doctoral dissertation at the end of the project time.


Requirements:


# We are looking for a team player with a strong interest in research and development in radiation oncology. Formal admission requires a very good Master’s or equivalent degree in physics, engineering or computer science, preferably with specialization in the field of medical radiation physics, multimodal image analysis, and/or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging physics. Demonstrable experience with scientific programming and image processing is a prerequisite. The PhD student will work in the Group on Image-Guided High-Precision Radiotherapy at the Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay of the HZDR in Dresden. Ongoing research projects of the Institute cover all major areas of photon and proton/ion beam radiation therapy, including image-guided adaptive treatment planning, radiation biology, medical physics, clinical studies in radiation therapy as well as quality assurance. The project is further supported by an interdisciplinary group of scientists and clinicians from radiation oncology and radiology.
