Job description:

As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.

The newly founded Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) at the University of Leipzig is part of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and aims to uncover the molecular underpinnings of metabolic, obesity and vascular disorders to enable precision therapies. As one of the world’s leading research institutes, the Helmholtz Zentrum München is a highly driven and stimulating international environment. Together with renowned scientists and supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure, you will have the opportunity to make important contributions towards scientific knowledge and the improvement of people’s quality of life.

The Young Investigator group "Molecular Obesity Research" at HI-MAG in Leipzig is now recruiting a

PhD student in Molecular Obesity Research (f/m/d)

Your mission

The Molecular Obesity Research group is interested in molecular mechanisms underlying or contributing to the human disease of obesity and their comorbidities. The focus is on pathobiochemical changes in adipose tissue and specifically the physiological function of adipose tissue derived proteins and their role in pathological processes related to obesity and insulin resistance. We use our expertise in protein expression and purification to generate substantial amounts of adipokines and elucidate the structural characteristics and molecular mechanisms underlying their biological activity. In parallel, we are dedicated to unravel their physiological function in health and disease using isolated cells, tissues and animal models.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on one or more exciting projects that will investigate how fat derived adipokines contribute to obesity related diseases and how they function on the molecular level.

Your qualifications

We seek a motivated and open-minded PhD student holding a recent M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry or Biology (or equivalent). The ideal applicant should be highly motivated, have good communication skills and be a quick learner. An excellent level of written and spoken English is mandatory. We offer modern equipment, a multi-disciplinary approach with state-of-the-art techniques, and a good working atmosphere in a young team.
