At the Otto Schott Institute for Materials Research, Chair of Materials Science at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of Friedrich Schiller University Jena, one position for a research assistant (m/f/d) (PhD student) for 30 hours/week is vacant as of 15.06.2019 or later.

Research focus for the position is:

Creation and understanding of protein nanofibers and protein nanofiber based scaffolds

Required qualifications

  • A recently obtained university degree (MSc or diploma) in materials science (preferred), or experimental polymer physics or physical/organic chemistry or biochemistry with excellent study results
  • Research experience in one or more of the following fields:
    o Materials science
    o Biomaterials
    o Proteins and/or biopolymers
    o Tissue regeneration
    • Research experience in the field of materials fabrication (protein based materials, biomaterials, scaffolds, polymers, polymers, hydrogels) and materials characterization (AFM, DLS etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written English and/or German language skills
  • Communication and didactic skills

Main tasks

  • Fabrication/synthesis of protein nanofibers
  • Creation, characterization and understanding (structure-property relationships) of degradable protein nanofiber based scaffolds
  • Development of new, groundbreaking materials concepts
  • Participation in the preparation of applications for third-party funding and in project management
  • In addition, the applicants are expected to work on their further scientific qualification, e.g. a doctorate.

The position is initially for 2 years (part time, 75%).
