The unique properties of the European XFEL electron beam offers the possibility to test quantum electro-dynamics (QED) in the critical field regime, never probed before. This critical field was predicted by Schwinger and can be achieved within the rest frame of the XFEL electron beam by an interaction of the electrons with a high-intensity laser pulse. The LUXE Experiment is currently starting to evaluate the feasibility of such an experiment to test strong-field QED at the European XFEL. This experiment combines interdisciplinary expertise and needs to be designed such that it is fully parasitic to standard XFEL operation. The high-intensity laser system that will interact with the electron beam is a critical component of the project. A precise characterization of the laser pulses is essential to interpret experimental data.
