The Center for Macroscopic Quantum States (bigQ) at DTU Physics is looking for excellent PhD students to work in the field of experimental quantum optomechanics with the aim of studying quantum physics in a new regime, and to develop new technologies for quantum computing and quantum communication.

bigQ is a Center of Excellence in quantum science and technology whose goal is to explore quantum physics in new macroscopic regimes with the aim of deepening our understanding of quantum physics and to speed-up the development of the Quantum Internet and the Quantum Computer. Our main focus is basic research but we also strongly encourage and support innovation and industry partnerships.

The center comprises around 45 people including Faculty members, PhD students, postdocs, engineers and an administrator.

The project
The radiation-pressure coupling between light and mechanical oscillators inside an optical cavity permits full control of the quantum motion of mechanics, and it has become the foundation for numerous phenomena and applications in the burgeoning field of cavity quantum optomechanics.

In these PhD projects, we will significantly advance the field of cavity quantum optomechanics. Specifically, we will deploy novel topologically-optimized mechanical oscillators with extremely high quality factors, developed within the center, and millimeter sized crystals with high-quality acoustic modes inside high-finesse optical cavities at low temperatures. Using these extraordinary properties of the mechanical oscillators, we expect to be able to bring them into states exhibiting distinctly quantum features. The aim of the projects is to obtain exquisite control of the oscillators through interaction with non-classical light (squeezed light and continuous variable entanglement) and high-efficiency detection, and to explore their physics and applications in the macroscopic regime.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years,
