Two PhD positions are available from 1st October, 2019 in the research groups of Professor Ian Hickson and Associate Professor Ying Liu at the University of Copenhagen.
These fellowships are funded by a grant recently awarded to a consortium of partners from 9 universities in 6 European countries by the European Union Horizon 2020 Framework Programme (Project: 859853 — AntiHelix). The focus of the Antihelix project is to analyze DNA helicases in cells of different organisms at the molecular, biochemical and cellular level with the ultimate aim of developing specific inhibitors as potential anti-tumour drugs. The successful applicants will have the advantage of learning technologies in the fields of biophysics, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology or advanced microscopy. As partners of this consortium, the Hickson and Liu groups at the CCS will study the functions of the human RecQ family helicases and the RTEL1 helicase, respectively. Mutations of these helicases have can cause human diseases. Further details of the research undertaken in these laboratories can be found on the CCS website (http://www.ccs.ku.dk).
The key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty within the Antihelix consortium are listed below:Carry out and complete an independent research project under the supervision of either Professor Hickson or Associate Professor Liu. Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points. Write regular reports, scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project. Take part in all of the meetings or training courses organized by the consortium partners. It is expected that fellows will spend a period of research training in at least one other laboratory in the consortium. Obtain experience with teaching and/or other types of dissemination activities related to your PhD project. Participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings. Obtain experience from an external research institution, preferably abroad.
We are looking for highly motivated individuals with the following criteria:Must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related area of biology, biochemistry, chemistry or biophysics. Can be of any nationality, but due to EU requirements for researcher mobility, must not have lived in Denmark for more than one year in the previous three years. Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work well in international academic settings. Ability to work in a team of multidisciplinary scientists, and the potential to work independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Other relevant credentials are:Good academic record. A track record of publication-standard research. Work experience in relevant areas. Good time-management skills.
The research will be carried out in the laboratories of Ian Hickson and Ying Liu in the CCS, a Center of Excellence recently established by a major grant from The Danish National Research Foundation. The CCS provides an international level research environment to train young researchers in the fields of Cell Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry. The working language of the CCS is English.

Terms of employment and employment
The employment for these two PhD fellows is full time and for 3 years. The starting date is October 1, 2019 or by agreement. The post is conditional upon the candidate’s successful enrolment in the PhD school at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the candidate in consultation with the supervisors.
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 26.755 DKK /approx. 3.567 EUR (April 2018-level) plus pension.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor. The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement. Once the assessment work has been completed, each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
