We seek a highly talented candidate to do a PhD project on theoretical nanolaser physics within a recently started ERC Advanced Grant. The overall goal of the project is to explore, both experimentally and theoretically, a new class of nanophotonic devices based on Fano resonances, which promise to drastically reduce the quantum noise of nanolasers, while simultaneously increasing the modulation speed and offering unique control of the laser output. These properties are crucial for applications in future integrated photonic circuits.

The new Fano laser structures display rich and interesting physics due to the interplay between nonlinear light-matter interaction, the unusual properties of Fano resonances and fundamental quantum noise, which is of particular importance in nano-scale devices. The PhD project will focus on theoretical modelling of the laser, in order to understand the fundamental laser physics, interpret experimental results, as well as designing new laser structures to be fabricated by colleagues. Full solutions of Maxwell’s equations including light-matter interactions, as well as simpler rate equation-based approaches will be pursued.

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD candidate will interact closely with other team members in the ERC Advanced Grant “Fano Photonics”, as well as with other staff in the Quantum and Laser Photonics group headed by Prof. Jesper Mørk. Specific tasks include the establishment of a new quantum dot nanolaser model enabling study of the fundamental laser properties. Developing efficient numerical simulation techniques as well as the use of advanced mathematical tools for analyzing the laser dynamics are important elements of the PhD project.

As part of the Danish PhD program, the student will follow a number of PhD courses as well as take part in teaching. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out a longer external research stay. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Candidates with a strong background within laser physics, quantum optics, photonics, or applied mathematical physics are preferred.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Candidates will be assessed by Professor Jesper Mørk and a Department panel.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. The approximate salary per year is DKK 381.716 including pension.
