In view of current global challenges, like climate change and growing world population, the Forschungszentrum Jülich does research on agricultural topics such as the optimization of the crop yield, improvement of soil and water protection and the minimization of the climate impact. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of flow and transport processes in soils as well as the dynamic development of root growth is necessary.A common geophysical non-invasive measurement method for such applications is the ground penetrating radar (GPR). Typical GPR systems are working in a frequency range from about 200 to 2000 MHz. The GPR signals are coupled into the soil using antennas on the ground surface. Thereby, characteristic properties of soils, such as the electric and dielectric conductivity, are measured without influencing the soils texture and the processes within the soil. In cooperation with the Agrosphere Institute (IBG-3), we will develop a novel measurement system with many antennas that enables for high resolution 3D tomography measurements of undisturbed soil columns.
- MSc degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering or physics
- Knowledge of programming and data processing
- Interest in computer-based simulation and modelling
- Experience in MATLAB
- Willingness to teamwork is expected
- Interest in experimental laboratory and Fieldwork
The goal of this doctoral project is the model based simulation and optimization of a novel GPR measurement system for 3D tomography measurements at soil columns. Later on, this model should also be used for the numerical correction of the measurement data. In parallel to this project, a novel measurement system will be set up such that the results of the model can be verified and applied to real measurements.
