Area of research:
Optimization-based design of future energy systems requires high-fidelity simulation of components. However, such simulations often comprise complex mechanistic models hidden in specialized simulation software together with numerical solvers, making their use in mathematical optimization practically intractable. A common approach to overcome this problem is to train reduced-order models (ROMs) on a set of input-output pairings derived from sampling of the simulation. The scope of this PhD project is to develop methods for systematic construction of data-driven models as ROMs for use in optimization-based design and operation of energy systems. Your tasks in detail:
Develop methods for systematic construction of data-driven ROMs for use in optimization Extend our in-house energy systems modeling framework by efficient formulations and algorithms for optimization with embedded ROMs Apply the new methods and algorithms to challenging design and operations problems
Excellent degree (Master, Diploma) in computational engineering, energy/process systems engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a relevant discipline Expert knowledge of at least one programming language (preferably Python and C++) Expertise in numerical optimization and machine learning Excellent skills in spoken and written English: TOEFL or equivalent evidence of English-speaking skills Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team A high level of scholarship as indicated, for example, by bachelor and master study transcripts and two reference letters
