Job description:

The Cluster of Excellence “Post Lithium Energy Storage (POLiS)”, devoted to research on post-Li electrochemical energy storage systems, funded by the German Excellence Strategy at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Ulm University, offers a unique research environment. 

On the long-term perspective, alternatives to lithium (Li) based electrochemical energy storage are needed. Typically, the electrodes are multiphase porous material systems which need to be designed such that electronic conductivity, as well as the transport of the shuttle ions are optimized at the same time to provid e high capacity or high power. Discrete-Element-Methods allow for the efficient calculation of transport properties resulting from the collective behavior of granular electrodes.

In this PhD work you will develop Discrete-Element-Methods for the design and optimization of post-Li porous electrodes. The modeling should account for mechanical effects and processing steps. This project is based on previous work on electronic as well as ionic transport properties in granular materials Within POLiS, you will cooperate closely with experimentalists and theoreticians. This includes the definition of the problems to be investigated, import of parameter values, export of simulation results, and exchange on computational methods.

You hold a very good Master's degree in engineering science, materials science, physics, or technomathematics with an emphasis on computational methods. Knowledge and experience about transport theories is desirable.
