PhD Position in Microbial Nitrogen Transformations in Aquatic Systems

University of Southern Denmark (SDU)

Odense M, Denmark

The Department of Biology at SDU invites applications for a PhD position to study the microbial ecology and ecophysiology of dissimilatory microbial nitrogen transformations in natural aquatic environments. The position is part of our continuing efforts to understand the dynamics of the nitrogen cycle in environments such as oceanic oxygen minimum zones, anoxic basins and aquatic sediments.

One research objective for the position will be the identification of microbes and elucidation of pathways involved in the production and consumption of nitrous oxide. Experimental techniques may include molecular biological analyses, cultivation and biogeochemical rate measurements including stable isotope tracing.

Hence, we seek candidates with a background in biology, (bio-)geochemistry, molecular microbiology, or related fields, with experience in the analysis of environmental samples, and with an aptitude for fieldwork and experimentation. The PhD should begin summer/early autumn 2019.

Deadline: 4 June 2019.
