Job description:

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1260 employees (including visiting scientists), the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the “System Earth” and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany’s largest science organization. For Section 3.1 "Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry" we invite applications for a

Job Vacancy No. 3215

PhD Student (m/f/x) on “The role of organic and inorganic geochemical interactions in the formation of Copper Mineralisation in the Kupferschiefer” An increase in the demand for copper is an inevitable outcome of the energy transition and the evolution of high-tech societies. This project will bring together cutting edge techniques in organic geochemistry and mineralogy to understand a world class copper system. The student will be part of the Ore Genesis research group led by Prof. Sarah Gleeson and co-supervised by P.D. Dr. Hans-Martin Schultz from Section 3.2 Organic Geochemistry.

Your responsibilities:

  • conduct original research on the geology, mineralogy, organic and inorganic geochemistry of the Kupferschiefer
  • fieldwork and drill core logging
  • evaluate the sedimentology and mineralogy of the host rock; develop a mineralogical paragenesis, from all stages of diagenesis to hydrothermal mineralisation
  • conduct a bulk rock lithogeochemical study on un-mineralised host rocks
  • carry out organic geochemical analyses including GC-MS, FT-ICR-MS
  • analyse sulphides for trace elements (LA-ICP-MS) and S isotopes to constrain trace element associations and sulphur sources pathways
  • report regularly to the collaborators, publish in international peer-reviewed journals and present research results at scientific meetings

Your qualifications:

  • applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a discipline of geosciences
  • background knowledge in aspects of the following: sedimentary basins, sequence stratigraphy, diagenesis, organic geochemistry, hydrothermal ore deposits, hydrothermal fluid geochemistry
  • experience in standard petrographic techniques (transmitted and reflected light)
  • familiarity with interpreting different types of geochemical data (bulk rock lithogeochemistry, LA-ICP-MS, stable isotopic data, organic geochemical data) is advantageous
  • demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team, keep to deadlines and engage in interdisciplinary work
  • candidates are expected to write their thesis in English and knowledge of German is an advantage
