Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPICEC)

Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany

The group of Synergistic Organometallic Catalysis at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Mülheim an der Ruhr is currently seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate (m/f/d) to work on the design, synthesis and characterization of organometallic systems presenting multiple bonds between a transition metal, and elementary building-blocks (C, N, O, H) relevant in energy research. This project aims particularly to investigate reactive intermediates present during catalysis. These transient species are the keys to understanding bond making and breaking reactions, allowing for further optimization of the catalytic sequence.

The successful candidate will be integrated into an interdisciplinary and international group jointly be-tween the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and the Ruhr University-Bochum. The position is available starting as soon as possible. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree in chemistry or a related subject.
  • Candidates must show a solid background in organometallic chemistry, with emphasis on synthetic aspects.
  • Experience in the handling of air-sensitive and thermally labile organometallic compounds is required.
  • Experience with standard structural characterization techniques such as NMR, X-ray diffractometry, and mass spectrometry is required.
  • Experience with other techniques such as IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, GC, GC-MS and elemental analysis is an advantage.
  • Self-motivated personality with independent, target-oriented, and systematic working style. A high degree of creativity and flexibility as well as good collaborative skills.
  • Excellent English-language proficiency (verbal and written).

The Max Planck Society explicitly encourages applications from women and qualified people with disabilities.
