Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term Postdoctoral Researcher position on computational mechanics of biodegradable medical devices at the Biomechanics Research Centre (BioMec), College of Engineering and Informatics, National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded through a European Union Horizon-2020 project, ‘InSilc’ (In-silico trials for drug-eluting bioabsorbable vascular scaffold development and evaluation), and and are available from  May 2019 to the 31st October 2020.

 

Compared to permanent bare-metal stents, the design of the next-generation of bioabsorbable vascular scaffold implants is complicated by the range of interacting physiochemical parameters that control material degradation in both polymer- and metal-based devices. Predicting bulk- or surface-based degradation mechanisms in polymer and metal-based bioresorbable materials is extremely challenging and requires advanced computational material modelling strategies, which consider the physical mechanisms responsible for degradation behaviour. Furthermore, the development of such models must be supported by rigorous experimental testing protocols that evaluate spatiotemporal progression of both mechanical and physiochemical material properties. This aim of this project is to develop an predictive modelling framework for bioabsorbable vascular scaffolds implants.

 

This research will be conducted using the equipment, technical expertise, office and research space within the College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway. The new 14,000m2 Engineering building houses state-of-the-art Biomedical Engineering facilities including cell culture laboratories, biomechanical testing laboratories, micro-CT scanning, microscopy, research space and computer suites.

 

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for computational simulation of polymer- and metal-based bioabsorbable materials. The successful candidate will be experienced. The successful in the development of computational models of medical devices and/or biomechanics. Prospective candidates should be highly-motivated to participate in experimental research related to the material degradation and medical device design. The candidate will work closely with industrial and academic collaborators from the InSilc consortium (www.insilc.eu)

 

 

Duties:

The successful candidates will:

  • Conduct a specified programme of research in the area of finite element modelling of degradation of vascular stents under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • Engage in collaborative research activity with other members of the InSilc consortium.
  • Contribute to the research project’s dissemination through the preparation of reports on project deliverables.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, by actively participate in national/international conferences and meetings and publishing in high impact factor journals.

 

Qualifications/Skills required:

  • Applicants must have a primary degree and Ph.D. in mechanical or biomedical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Applicants must have first author publications in leading journals in the field of finite element modelling, biomechanics and/or continuum mechanics.

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a strong background in computational modelling of medical devices and/or biomechanics.
  • Applications must have a strong background in the Abaqus Finite Element software.
  • Applicants must have experience in engineering programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C, Matlab, Python).
  • Applicants should have excellent communication and organizational skills and should be highly motivated and passionate about development of advanced computational engineering solutions.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience in degradation modelling of metallic or polymer materials.
  • Experience in the development of user defined material subroutines (UMATS).

 

Salary €37,223 – €48,208 per annum

 

Start date: Position is available from May 2019
