Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, specific purpose contract at the level of Postdoctoral Researcher at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The successful candidate will be part of the project team on a project entitled The Impact of International Star Scientists on Irish Science.  The project is funded under Science Foundation Ireland’s Science Policy Research Programme. This position is available from September 2019 for circa 2 years with the possibility of extension subject to project success and funding acquisition.

 

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work in a team of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students under the supervision of Professor John McHale. The team’s research focus will be the study of the recruitment of star scientists on the performance of Irish science. Comparisons with other high-income small open economies will also be undertaken. Among the outcomes of interest are the direct effects of the star on institutional performance, indirect effects on the productivity of colleagues, implications for subsequent recruitment, and impacts on collaboration patterns. The implications of the findings for the development of Irish science research policy will be explored. 

 

Applicants must have excellent econometric/statistical skills and experience working with large datasets.  Experience with using text analytics to develop datasets based on text records would be a strong advantage. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in the overall management of the programme. 

 

Duties:

  • Assembly of datasets
  • Econometric/statistical analysis of datasets
  • Writing research papers for publication in top-level outlets
  • Writing funding proposals
  • Contribute to programme management

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in economics, statistics or other relevant discipline
  • Record of publication in economics, research policy or related disciplines

    • Evidence of excellent econometric/statistical skills
    • Demonstrable experience working with large datasets
    • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
    • Evidence of research project management
    • Strong coordination, organisational and management skills
    • Be a motivated self-starter, as well as being focused and exacting in their work ethic.

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience with text analytics and related technologies
  • Good record of service to, and participation in, the academic community.
  • Good dissemination skills targeting non-academic audiences (industry-focused).
  • Track record of designing, developing and managing research projects
  • Supervision/co-supervision of post-graduate students.

 

Starting Salary: €37,223 – €39,530 per annum. 

Start date:  1st September 2019 (or the soonest possible date thereafter)
