Job description:

The "Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energies" (HI ERN) is as IEK-11 a part of Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ). The institute works in close collaboration with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). The collaboration between the partners is focussed on the research areas of innovative materials and processes for photovoltaic energy and solar fuels, as well as for hydrogen technologies, therefore covering novel approaches for conversion and storage of CO2 neutral energy. The successful candidate will be part of the department "Electrocatalytic Interfacial Engineering", headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Simon Thiele, in the team "Membrane Production and Synthesis", headed by Dr. Jochen Kerres. The department focuses on the production, analysis and simulation of functionally optimal structures from the nanometer scale to the micrometer scale in electrochemically active materials as well as the production of new materials for catalysis and polymer electrolyte membranes.

Your Job:

  • Synthesis and analysis of ionic conductive solid electrolyte polymers

  • Preparation and characterization of acidic and alkaline membranes for fuel cells and electrolysers in the operating range between approx. 20-200°C

  • Participation in project meetings

  • Coordination with internal and external partners

  • Publication and presentation of research results in relevant journals or at international conferences

Your Profile:

  • Successfully completed scientific master`s degree in chemistry with excellent grades
  • Sound knowledge in synthetic and analytical polymer chemistry
  • Knowledge in the field of (acidic and alkaline) solid electrolyte polymers and their application in electrochemical membrane processes such as fuel cells, electrolysis or redox-flow batteries is an advantage
  • Great motivation to complete the doctorate within 3 years
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Willingness to show initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Strong cooperation and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team
  • Excellent oral and written German and English skills
