We are looking for a self-motivated NMR spectroscopist to cover a period of maternity leave within Astex’s Molecular Sciences Group. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for providing NMR support for Pyramid™, Astex’s proprietary fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) platform and will be engaged in FBDD versus a spectrum of oncology and CNS targets. Your primary focus will be to enable and prosecute NMR fragment screening campaigns and to develop NMR-based affinity determination assays. You will be expected to work within, and communicate results to, inter-disciplinary project teams.

Key skills:

  • Practical experience in setting up, running and analysing NMR experiments on Bruker spectrometers on biological macromolecules, particularly proteins
  • Sound understanding of NMR theory
  • Organisation and communication skills and proactive working style
  • Expression and purification of (isotope labelled) proteins

Optional skills:

  • Experience with NMR automation & basic NMR spectrometer maintenance tasks
  • Experience with ligand-observed NMR experiments for probing protein small molecule interactions
  • Experience with NMR reporter assays
  • Expression of deuterated proteins and/or knowledge of insect cell expression systems
  • Good understanding of the physical principles underlying protein ligand interactions
  • Computational skills (Linux, scripting languages, …)
  • Other biophysical (ITC, Tm, SPR, MS) or structural methods (X-ray, cryo-EM)
