Job description:

We are looking for a Master student to join Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) on the structure and magneto-elastomeric properties of nanocomposite polymer materials. The novel aspect of the Master project is to combine scattering methods and microscopy (TEM) to determine the molecular structure and relate this to the rheological and magnetic properties of the nanostructured materials. The work will be conducted at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. This project is part of the DFG Priority Program 1681 offering a highly interdisciplinary environment.

ProjectYou will investigate the structure of nanocomposite polymer materials based on iron oxide nanoparticles grafted by polymer shell. Samples in water and in polymer matrices will be characterized macroscopically using rheological methods and microscopically by scattering techniques (X-ray, neutrons) combined with electron microscopy. You will perform X-ray, TEM and rheology experiments in Jülich using in-house instruments, neutron scattering experiments at the neutron source MLZ in Munich.

Your profileKnowledge of scattering techniques is not required but would be a plus. Experience with computer programming for data analysis is advantageous.

Our offerWe are a young and dynamic research institute with excellent experimental equipment embedded in the international research environment of the Forschungszentrum Jülich. You will by closely supervised by experienced staff. You will obtain your Master degree from the RWTH Aachen.

Please apply via recruiter’s website.
