DESY’s laser science and technology group is responsible for research, development and operations of high power femtosecond and picosecond lasers related to particle accelerators and free electron lasers (FEL). Ultrafast laser technology is one of the key enabling technologies for many science experiments at the soft X-ray FEL facility FLASH and the hard-X-ray FEL facility European XFEL. It is required for ultrafast-laser-X-ray pump-probe experiments at few femtosecond time resolution. In a joint R&D project between the European XFEL and DESY we will be developing and evaluating novel femtosecond oscillators for driving high power, high repetition rate ultrafast lasers for pump-probe experiments at those facilities. For this project we are seeking a self-driven highly motivated laser scientist.
Advance low timing jitter femtosecond fiber oscillatorsDevelop pulse picking techniques for high-repetition rate oscillators Characterize and evaluate timing-jitter of in-house developed and commercial femtosecond oscillators
PhD in physics, electrical engineering or similar disciplineExcellent knowledge of ultrafast fiber laser technology Hands-on experience with electro-optical modulators and of timing-jitter measurement techniques Proven scientific track record
