Context of intervention

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The successful candidate will join ERIN’s Environmental Research and Technology Platform (ERTP). ERTP makes state-of-the art monitoring, analytical, computational and modelling resources accessible to internal users as well as external partners, such as industry, public stakeholders and academics. It offers a unique combination of high-level expertise, state-of-the art instruments and fully equipped labs for environmental analysis, integrative biology, as well as a dense hydro-climatological and biodiversity measurement network.
More specifically, the successful candidate will provide support to general activities in the laboratories and in the field and take care of the maintenance of equipment.

Description


The Technician provides technical support to RDI projects and service delivery activities by carrying out technical day-to-day activities and ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of equipment/laboratories/computers. More specifically he/she will:
  • Provide technical support for general activities and maintenance in the environmental laboratories, including chemistry labs and biology labs
  • Provide technical support for general activities in the field, e.g. to participate in the mounting of field stations or collecting data from camera traps
  • Ensure the maintenance of balances, pipettes, hoods, and other general equipment. Calibrate and ensure the good functional order of the equipment
  • Make sure that all the required material and supplies for the lab activities are available on time
  • Intervene, when possible, in case of equipment malfunctioning or organize external interventions to fix it
  • Participate in the general organization of the laboratories on different sites including waste management of the department, implementation of safety measures, contact with lab providers, general maintenance of lab infrastructure
  • Participate to sample preparation for some specific projects
  • Draft analysis/measurement/calibration reports
  • Respect “Health Security Environment” protocols
  • Participate in team meetings
  • Proactively propose improvements

Moreover, the applicant will be asked to:
  • Learn, master and apply the processes/protocols related to the instruments/equipment she/he uses
  • Keep abreast of update and best practices of her/his technique(s)
  • Required trainings will be provided if necessary to the selected applicant

Profile


Education
  • Degree in laboratory technology

Required seniority
  • 2-3 years of experience

Competencies
The successful applicant will be integrated in a team of professionals who will share their expertise and know-how with her/him. Prerequisites for a good integration to the team are the following:
  • Be a team player with good capacities to listen, learn and also to share knowledge with others
  • Be service oriented and proactive in the realisation of the work to be done
  • Be responsible, implicated and capable to organise own work. Ability to plan and manage a variety of activities in parallel
  • Be communicative and capable of interacting proactively with people
  • Previous experience in lab and equipment operation, calibration and maintenance
  • Experience in planning and executing experiments, where effective multi-tasking is required
  • Experience in providing demonstrations and writing technical reports
  • Knowledge of “Health Security Environment” requirements
  • Good knowledge of MS Office

Language
  • Proficiency in English
  • French or German is an asset
