The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

JUNIOR PROFESSORSHIP (W1) FOR APPLIED BIOINFORMATICS

commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. JP 302.

Responsibilities:
We are seeking a scientist with a proven track record of international publications and research in the field of applied bioinformatics. Research should focus on the application and advancement of bioinformatic methods in the context of modern experimental techniques of the life sciences, preferably at the interface of medicinal chemistry and/or structural biology. Duties will include collaboration on interdisciplinary projects in the University’s core research area Infection Research as well as in the emerging field of Computing in Science under the aegis of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences. In particular, the post holders are expected to foster close connections to the Centre for Structural Systems Biology Hamburg (CSSB).

The successful candidate is also expected to participate in the recently founded Helmholtz graduate school DASHH (Data Science for the Structure of Matter).

In their application, applicants are expected to indicate to which of the University’s core re-search areas, emerging fields, or profile initiatives (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/forschung/forschungsprofil/forschungsschwerpunkte.html) their research can best be assigned. Duties then include participation in one or more of the core research are-as, emerging fields, or profile initiatives.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 HmbHG applies.

Requirements:
Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 18 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG).

Additional criteria:
Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. Applicants should provide a research proposal outlining their scientific goals for the position.

The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants have excellent teaching skills and teaching experience. The successful candidates will be expected to teach courses in the Master of Science in Bioinformatics and the Bachelor of Science in Computing in Science. The creation of a range of modules for students in the life sciences is also desirable. Applicants must provide details of teaching experience and objectives. Further duties include participation in academic self-governance.
