An ever increasing number of large tomographic volumes are recorded at synchrotron facilities world wide. Due to drastic increase in data volumes, there is a recent trend to provide data analysis services at facilities as well. One of the challenges is to deliver a web-based data browser enabling fast previews of the stored 3D volumes. Since the recorded data sets exceed 10 gigabytes, the existing visualization tools will not work and new techniques dealing with dynamically reduced data sets have to be developed.
The master thesis will be performed within an international project that aims to build cloud-based infrastructure for synchrotron light sources enabling remote data analysis and visualization. The student is expected to contribute to the development of novel visualization method for large tomographic volumes suitable for modern web browsers and easily scalable from mobile devices to large visualization stations. To achieve the highest possible quality using reduced amount of data, it is crucial to evaluate advanced rendering techniques like multiresolution and progressive rendering or volume compression.
The student is expected to know modern web technologies well, to be familiar with basics of image processing, and have prior experience in 3D rendering.
