Job description:

Laser-induced carbonization (LIC) has emerged as a simple and rapid process for fabricating porous graphitic carbon on polymeric substrates. LIC enables patterning of the graphitic carbon on the polymeric substrate by selective decomposition of the polymer through photochemical and photothermal process. Other than graphene, several metal and metal oxide composites of graphene have been also synthesized on flexible films using the LIC process. Polyimide films have been mostly used for synthesis of these materials in the LIC process. As an alternative to polyimide, here we aim to use electrodeposited chitosan films as the substrate in the LIC process towards synthesis of metal/graphene composite. Furthermore, we plan to use the resulting material for sensing applications towards development of a flexible wearable sensor device.

The specific tasks within the project will be: (i) electrodeposition of chitosan; (ii) laser-induced carbonization of the electrodeposited film; (iii) material characterization of the resulting material using different analytical techniques such as SEM, Raman, XRD and TEM; and (iv) characterization of the electrochemical properties of the resulting material.

The candidate will be using the facilities existent the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), i.e., microfabrication facilities and micro-characterization equipment. Furthermore, the candidate will be given the opportunity to co-author in a conference/journal paper.
