The Institute of Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI) develops new methods and tools for the characterization of power gird behavior, modelling and simulation. Special attention is drawn to the grid frequency due to its importance to grid dynamics. Within one period, the frequency cannot be measured directly, but needs to be estimated. This estimation (result and quality) is of cause influenced by the signals properties (distortion) and therefore also depends on the measurement location in the power gird.
First objective of this thesis is a theoretical and experimental analysis of the dependency of Instantaneous Frequency methods with regard to the signal properties in time and frequency domain. Results should than be used to develop and set up an analysis of measurement location sensitivity using real-world data that is available at our institute.
Specific tasks are:
Literature review focusing on Instantaneous Frequency and the related phasor estimation techniques
Analysis of the dependency btw. frequency estimation and the signal properties + practical experiments with synthetic signals using MATLAB
Development and implementation of an analysis on measurement location dependency of frequency estimation using real-world data.
We are looking for a highly self-motivated student in the field of energy engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or related. Knowledge and prior exposition to signals & system theory as well as MATLAB are a requirement.
