The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich operates one of the most powerful HPC infrastructures in Europe, enabling scientists and engineers to solve highly complex problems by simulations. JSC’s Simulation Laboratories conduct domain-specific research and provide high-level support to user communities. Specifically, the SimLab Terrestrial Systems performs high-performance scientific computing in the geosciences and contributes to an improved understanding and prediction of geophysical, hydrological, meteorological and bio-geochemical processes in terrestrial systems. The SimLab TerrSys is jointly operated by JSC and the Centre for High Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems (www.hpsc-terrsys.de) of the Geoverbund ABC/J (www.geoverbund-abcj.de). This Centre supports and coordinates geoscientific HPC applications in the region Aachen, Cologne, Bonn, and Jülich.

Your Job:

A major research objective in the work programme on “Net-Zero-2050 emissions” the Helmholtz Climate Initiative HI-CAM wants to develop a prototype soil carbon app to demonstrate the potential of modern data technologies and establish an end-to-end workflow from scientific simulations to end user web services. Terrestrial Systems Modelling Platform simulations (TerrSysMP) carried out on the Jülich HPC systems shall be processed and the output shall be prepared according to FAIR data principles so that automated workflows and human users can get flexible and fast access to specific data subsets. Within the framework of TerrSysMP your work includes the following tasks:

  • Design and implement a tool for automatic extraction of simulation metadata from run scripts and system information

  • Assist in the implementation of an iRODS-based data management framework (B2SAFE)

  • Develop a data workflow and data staging concept for output to allow linking model output files to persistent identifiers in the data publishing service B2SHARE

  • Assist in the optimization of data staging of input and output

  • Develop and extend parallel scientific software tools or processing chains

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in either computer science or applied mathematics; a PhD degree and relevant scientific publications are an advantage
  • Expertise in HPC systems and numerical modelling workflows
  • Experiences with Python and SQL databases
  • Experience with handling large data files
  • Very good communication and organisational skills
  • Very good command of the English language
