Summary: 

The Health and Wellness Specialist will serve as a member of Janelia’s Safety, Health, and Security (SH&S) team.  The mission of the SH&S Department is to support ground-breaking research by providing innovative safety, health, security, and compliance solutions.  The Health and Wellness Specialist will participate in this mission by managing Janelia’s health and wellness programs including wellness programming, the occupational health program, incident management, the ergonomics program, and events as requested. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate Janelia’s Wellness Program
    • Organize and support the Wellness Committee
    • Create wellness content for the Portal
    • Support the “Campus Companion” program
    • Plan and organize events (lectures, talks, and social events) to support wellness initiatives
    • Organize annual Flu Shot Clinics, Biometric Screenings, and Blood Drives
    • Organize FA/CPR/AED Training
  • Coordinate Occupational Health Program
    • Coordinate monthly occupational health clinics and visits to Occupational Health Provider’s office as necessary
    • Maintain records associated with occupational health services (e.g., Hepatitis B declination forms, animal allergy questionnaires, hearing tests, occupational health results) and ensure that employees receive results from occupational health services
    • Ensure that employees are offered services as requested by Safety Specialists
    • Assist in developing and implementing a new Occupational Health Management and Database system
    • Administer the Respiratory Protection Program
      • Perform quantitative respirator fit testing
      • Administer respirator training
      • Maintain inventory of respirators
    • Administer Hearing Conservation Program
      • Perform noise surveys
      • Coordinate annual audiometric testing
    • Coordinate Animal Allergy Surveillance Program
      • Ensure collection of animal allergy questionnaires
      • Coordinate review of questionnaires and referrals with occupational health program
  • Coordinate the Incident Management Program
    • Lead investigations of incidents that occur on campus
    • Ensure incidents are appropriately documented, recorded, and reported
    • Manage tracking of incidents and identify trends and areas where action/focus is needed
    • Generate quarterly and annual summaries of incidents for distribution to management
    • Manage OSHA 300 Recordkeeping to include annual postings and submissions
  • Manage the Ergonomics Program
    • Perform ergonomic assessments for employees
    • Maintain ergonomics equipment inventory
    • Deliver and adjust ergonomic equipment
  • Support of events such as
    • National Safety Month Campaigns
    • Tick Awareness
    • Community events (e.g, Janelia’s Got Talent, LipSync Battle)
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Scope:

  • This is an individual contributor role and has no supervisory or budget responsibilities.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences (ex: exercise science, nutrition, kinesiology, occupational health, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Experience:

  • Experience supporting wellness, occupational health, and/or ergonomics programs

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally lifts up to approximately 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Pushing and/or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent walking, standing (prolonged), sitting (prolonged), or bending
  • Subject to hazards including moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to temperature extremes, chemicals, oils, solvents, biohazards, and/or radiation sources
  • Must be able to perceive the nature of objects by color
  • Must be able to receive and provide guidance via telephone, 2-way radio, or other electronic means
