The Spatial Technologies Unit (STU) of the Precision RNA Medicine Core, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School Initiative for RNA Medicine, is seeking highly qualified personnel in the following positions:

 -      Head of Spatial Technologies (1 position)

-      Spatial/Single Cell Technologies Scientist (2 positions)

-      Bioinformatician/Computational Biologist (1 position)

 There are also open positions for postdoctoral researchers and internships in Spatial Technologies (computational and/or experimental).

 Spatial Technologies, including Spatial Transcriptomics and Proteomics, were deemed “Method of the Year 2020” by Nature Methods Journal and are currently revolutionizing biomedical research. The Spatial Technologies Unit aims to become a center for innovation, efficient service provision, and a focal point for Spatial Technologies research and development in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and across the United States. It hosts a comprehensive collection of leading spatial and single cell technologies from10x Genomics (Visium, Connect), NanoString (GeoMx), Akoya (Polaris Vectra, CODEX), Vizgen (MERSCOPE), and Bruker (Vutara VXL). Its unparalleled technological infrastructure, its location within the Harvard Medical School Ecosystem, and its translational role in a leading medical center provides exceptional opportunities for cutting-edge research and applications.

 The appointed candidates will have the opportunity to become leaders in Spatial Technologies; the most exciting and rapidly developing field in biomedical research and translation.

 Head of Spatial Technologies: You will report to the Faculty Director and will have responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day STU activities, the Unit staff, and for providing leadership in developing Unit resources, technical support, and training for researchers. You will contribute to the creation and support of an environment fostering teamwork, cooperation, respect, and diversity; will provide direction regarding overall staffing and allocation of time to specific projects; develop new experimental procedures and core service protocols as needed; and perform hands-on lab-technical work as required. You are expected to contribute to research, development, and innovation in spatial technologies and relevant research applications. 

 Requirements

  • Hands on experience in spatial and single cell technologies
  • Ability to go beyond existing technical specifications, expand technology limits, and integrate diverse modalities
  • Leadership experience
  • Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques and research equipment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to interact with academics or industry parties
  • Ability to coordinate large scale multi-part projects
  • PhD or equivalent experience in Biomedical Sciences
  • At least 2 years postdoctoral experience
  • Core or Service provision experience is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, implement, and evaluate innovative new approaches
  • Collaborate with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative, community research initiatives
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, protocols, policies and procedures, and performance standards
  •  Perform hands-on lab-technical work as required
  • As a leader and role model, participate in professional and community activities on a routine basis
  • Provide direction regarding overall laboratory staffing and specific research projects
  •  Establish and coordinate research, development, and innovation activities to expand relevant technologies and their applications.

 

Spatial Technologies Scientist (2 positions): You will optimize, apply, and develop cutting-edge spatial and single cell technologies, including spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, and genomics. You will have experience in spatial and/or single cell technologies, next generation sequencing library preparation, and working with tissue samples. The STU will continuously expand its portfolio of equipment and technologies, therefore the ability to adapt to a cutting-edge and evolving environment is highly desirable. You will work together with the Head of the STU also to develop new assays or applications as well as expand the limits of spatial and single cell technologies.

 Requirements

  • Hands on experience in spatial and single cell technologies
  • Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques and research equipment
  • Experience in the application of next generation sequencing assays
  • Experience in working with tissue samples (sectioning, staining, sequencing)
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with academics or with industry
  • PhD or equivalent experience in Biomedical Sciences

 Responsibilities

  • Perform, develop, and optimize spatial and single cell applications
  • Prepare samples for bulk, spatial, and single cell investigations.
  • Perform microscopy (optical, fluorescent, super-resolution)
  • Generate, investigate, explain, and disseminate data
  • Work together with the STU personnel to support its research, service, and education mission.


 Computational Biologist / Bioinformatician (1 position): You will manage, analyze, and integrate data produced by the bulk, single cell, and spatial investigations within the STU. You will have the opportunity to develop new technologies and methods, work together with researchers to expand the boundaries of the field, and communicate data or findings to stakeholders. You will be provided with extensive computational resources (workstations, High Performance Computing) and support from the Bioinformatics Unit and the tightly integrated bioinformatics research labs (Ioannis Vlachos and Winston Hide Labs).

 Requirements

  • Experience in spatial and single cell data analysis
  • Proven expertise in using and/or developing cutting-edge methods for high throughput data analysis
  • Image analysis experience will be considered a plus
  • Great interpersonal skills and ability to interact with academics or industry parties
  • PhD or equivalent experience in a quantitative science (Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Applied Math, Computer Science, etc).

 Responsibilities

  • Perform, develop, and optimize spatial and single cell data analyses
  • Create or expand algorithms and methodologies for data use and integration
  • Generate, investigate, explain, and disseminate data
  • Work together with the STU personnel to support its research, service, and education mission.
