About the team/job
We are looking for an experienced and energetic technical manager to lead the Infrastructure Services Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).
You will lead a team of 12 systems administrators working across storage, compute and network services to support over 40,000 cores of compute, 250PB of raw storage and a networking infrastructure spanning 3 data centres being accessed by over 65M web requests a day from all over the world.
We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus in the UK’s fast-growing technical cluster near Cambridge.
This exciting leadership position offers many opportunities to flex your technical and managerial skills while working in a collaborative international environment with over 1000 scientific, technical and administrative users to deliver a world-leading biomedical research IT environment. The Infrastructure Services team manages storage, compute, networking and security services across three data centres. A scientific background is not required for this position, but experience in supporting research computing would be a distinct advantage.
This role calls for you to lead the technical infrastructure design for the institute establishing robust repeatable procedures allowing for the operation and evolution of our diverse infrastructure services. A roadmap for the development of these services will be maintained, published and evolved in response to the needs of your users drawn from teams across the institute including IT, service and research teams. Capital and operational investment in these services will be aligned to a 5 year £43M IT infrastructure award from UKRI.
You will need to manage, mentor, develop and oversee the work of your team, ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction, across a portfolio of services to a diverse user community. In addition to being able to build strong working relationships with colleagues working in different disciplines – across EMBL and across the wider community.
As Team Leader you will need to be very organised, with managerial duties including financial and strategic planning as well as personnel and project management of the team’s technical activities. The team manages over 250PB of raw storage comprising a mixture of ObjectStore (HGST/Quantum & Cleversafe), scale out NFS (Isilon & NetApp), SAN, flash, and tape based storage solutions across the data centres. The storage devices are connected by a LAN and WAN managed by the team delivering up to 100Gbs between our data centres and have multiple IP links up to 20Gbs connection to JANET.
This storage supports a range of analytical services ranging from LSF based compute clusters, OpenStack, VMware, databases services (including Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Vertica, MSSQL) to name a few. The team also manages various LSF clusters and collaborates closely with other IT teams to deliver over 200 analytical services.
This position also offers an opportunity to contribute to the wider technical strategy of the institute, and to collaborate with other groups on applying for grants to fund our research-supportive infrastructure. It also requires occasional travel, mainly within Europe. Your team also works closely with other teams in our technical services cluster, which is led by Steven Newhouse.
- Proven and extensive experience in leading, line managing and mentoring a mixed team of systems administrators across a range of IT systems at increasing scale;
- Excellent technical proficiency across primarily UNIX based systems administration for different technology systems (e.g. NetApp, Isilon, CleverSafe, Hitachi, LSF, Slurm, Docker, Singularity, OpenStack, Public Cloud) being operated in a secure, segmented WAN/LAN;
- Documented experience in the successful delivery of IT services (including establishing user requirements, procurement, commissioning, migration, retirement);
- Demonstrated experience in building professional relationships on all levels within an organisation (i.e. senior management, junior staff, peers);
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills;
- Experience in managing conflicting, complex, deadline-driven priorities and solving related problems
You might also have
- Experience working in an academic/research environment;
- Familiarity with the European scientific community;
- Experience communicating and working with expert users in a niche area (e.g. bioinformatics).
