The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense is looking for a visionary Head of Department with the commitment and capacity to ensure high quality research, easily employable students, close cooperation with society, and wide dissemination of knowledge.

The Department of Biology is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science. You would be head of a department with about 130 employees, about 300 students, and a running budget of about DKK 70 mil. The department’s research ranges from microorganisms to ecosystems to global elemental cycles. The department has strong research groups in ecology, ecotoxicology, ecophysiology, biodemography, acoustic communication, biogeochemistry and the evolution of life. Our research groups have strong national and international reputations, and the department also houses world-leading research centres. The department offers research-based Bachelor and Master programmes in Biology and has about 30 PhD students and 25 postdocs spread throughout the various research groups.

Biology is a well-functioning department. We value communication and cooperation between the various research groups and we meet weekly for department seminars and for morning bread and coffee. We have a strong international research environment, attracting PhD students, postdocs, guest researchers and faculty from around the world. In addition to the research units, the department has its own secretariat, and a service unit with an electronic and a mechanical workshop.
