Area of research:
Have you (almost) completed your degree studies? Are you inspired by space exploration and keen to pursue a career in this exciting field? If so, perhaps you should take a closer look at the German Trainee Programme. Organised by DLR, it offers you the chance to work shoulder to shoulder with experts from the 22 member states of ESA – keeping your finger on the pulse of Europe‘s space programmes. Over a period up to 24 months, you will actively contribute to the latest research and/or technology projects. This is complemented by a generous scholarship. What better way to launch your career in international space business? The next GTP commences on 1st February 2020.
This is your opportunity to join the team at ESA HQ Daumesnil – Paris, France
Space Transportation System Engineer (GTP-2020-STS-DS)
STS-DS is part of the Launcher’s Development Department and hosts activities relevant to Space Transportation System Engineering in the frame of Space Transportation System’s development up to the transfer of the developed system into its recurrent exploitation.
STS-DS is focused on the vision of the developed system into exploitation and plays a specific role during the developed where it guarantees the coherence between the parallel threads of development activities run by a multitude of players.
In 2020, STS-DS will be fully engaged in Ariane 6 Combined Tests and preparation of the Maiden Flight campaign. Both activities fall into direct ESA responsibility and offer a perfect view of the insertion of a system under development into the recurrent exploitation.
For the purpose of its own tasks, STS DS works in tight interface with the Ariane 6 Primes CNES and ArianeGroup to which we will add also the Kick Stage Prime after Space19+ decisions.
The team is composed by a number of senior engineers, a Chief Engineer, a Principal Engineer and a Manager.
You will be trained on the job along two orthogonal axes:
management support by mastering key efficiency parameters representing the progress of system engineering activities and the relevant evaluation processes and tools technical support in the field of Customer’s requirement’s and generally for any issue relevant to the definition of Space Transportation Missions based on Ariane 6
For the Management support, it is worth to mention the management of Key Performance indicators and the weekly preparation of their update for the purpose of internal meetings and meetings with Industry Primes (e.g. End-to-End Management Meetings, Safety Management Meetings, Interface Control Committees, others). You will be trained on Lean Management methods and on the iObeya platform. Moreover, you will be trained on Verification and Configuration Control process and tools used by STS-DS for the purpose of Ariane 6 Development and Competitiveness Improvement programme.
For the Technical support, you will support the Lead Engineers for the finalization and maintenance of the STS-DS database of Customer’s requirements and especially you will contribute to the success of the development of a Kick Stage that is part of Competitiveness Improvement Programme.
