The Rudolf Virchow Center / Research Center for Experimental Biomedicine of the University of Würzburg (RVZ) was one of the first research centers founded by the German research foundation (DFG). The RVZ is part of the Medical Campus of University Hospital Würzburg and has a strong focus on biomedical imaging, structural biology and cardiovascular disease. We use state-of the art technologies to investigate proteins that regulate key cellular functions and whose study will advance our understanding of the etiology, diagnosis or treatment of diseases.
Research activities focus on protein structure and function, proteins in cellular signaling, and proteins in cell-cell interactions and motility, with a strong commitment to both basic and translational biomedical research. Among its diverse research areas, the center has a particular interest in platelet and megakaryocyte biology and related biomedical fields.
We are inviting applications for a
Group Leader (f/m/d)
Appointments will initially be for a period of six years (3+3), with an option of extension upon positive evaluation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary (according to salary agreement TV-L), a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family, and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.
You will lead a research group to pursue highly ambitious and original research at the frontier of vascular biology, hematopoiesis, cardiovascular disease or related fields. Research activities should complement ongoing activities in the center and at the university, in particular the Würzburg Platelet Group (www.platelets.eu) and the Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 240 „Platelets“ (www.platelets.eu/tr240/), a platelet research consortium that was established in 2018 to investigate the diverse functions of platelets beyond classical hemostasis. In general, the RVZ appoints group leaders early in their career and provides them with a very supportive, collaborative environment and generous work package for their independent position. Significant core funding and limited teaching responsibilities allow you undertake a farsighted research program.
The successful candidate will present a highly original and ambitious research plan that concisely describes the background and status of the questions that will be addressed, the experimental strategies and methods that will be employed, and the ultimate goals. A PhD degree in the Natural Sciences is expected.
Why join us
The RVZ is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an internationally leading biomedical research institute with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. We are embedded in a stimulating environment that includes the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research, the Max Planck Research Group in Systems Immunology, the Biocenter, the Institute for Molecular Infection Biology, and the University Hospital in Würzburg. The university furthermore offers comprehensive services concerning administrative and practical matters, e.g. the Welcome Centre (moving to Würzburg), the International Office, the Family Services as well as the JMU Research Academy (professional support and development – see www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/rvz/news/jobs-and-career/). The RVZ is committed to achieving gender balance and strongly encourages applications from women. Disabled applicants will be considered preferentially in case of equivalent qualifications. Appointment will be based on merit alone.
