Full Professor (W3) for Quantum Information and Communication (m/f/d)
The successful applicant will be assigned to Ulm University as a university professor and, in accordance with § 49 (3) LHG, will become a Head of Department at the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies (Jülich model).
Ulm University and the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies (DLR-QT) are striving to establish working groups in the field of quantum technologies for space applications with a focus on instruments for future space missions on scientific topics such as navigation and earth observation. The successful applicant will be Head of the Department of Quantum Information and Communication.
Research will focus on quantum information and communication, with particular emphasis on space technologies. We seek a candidate with internationally renowned expertise in experimental quantum key distribution (QKD), including but not limited to (i) QKD with discrete and/or continuous variables in optical fibers and in free space with special focus on satellites, (ii) practical safety analyses of the QKD process, (iii) the development of photonic quantum sources, and (iv) fundamental and applied questions of the quantum mechanical measurement process. Applicants should have established experience in working with industrial partners as well as in the acquisition of third-party funds, ideally with industrial participation. Furthermore, the candidate should have conducted internationally cutting-edge research projects. Collaboration with University research facilities, DLR institutes and the Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology (IQST) are requested.
In addition to the willingness and ability to establish and operate respective laboratories, didactic skills, experience in academic teaching and management as well as in the acquisition of research projects related to space research are expected. The professorship is supposed to teach quantum technologies with a focus on quantum information and – communication with a reduced teaching obligation
(2 hours per week). The topic will not be restricted solely to the field of physics, but may also be at the interface to the Faculty of Engineering, Computer Science and Psychology. The applicant will be given the opportunity to be active in all committees of Ulm University in agreement with the respective state higher education law.
