About SUSTech

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a research-oriented public university founded in Shenzhen, China’s innovation center, to serve as a model for reforming the education system and modernizing the national university system. Currently, SUSTech has about 800 faculty,including about 380 tenure/tenure-track professors, 27 academicians and fellows of academies; more than 50% of the faculty are high-level talents. There are 6470 students in SUSTech, including 4205 high quality undergraduate students and 2214 graduate students. Since 2016, according to National science and technology statistics of ordinary colleges and universities, SUSTech’s research fund per faculty member has been  more than CNY 1 million for three years, ranking among the top 5 universities in China. Hitherto, SUSTech has been granted 9 Guangdong Provision-level and 27 Shenzhen City-level research institutes/laboratories. In 2019, SUSTech was ranked No. 26 in “Nature Index” among all mainland universities of China. The “Nature Index 2018 Rising Stars” showing that among world’s 100 fastest-rising organizations, SUSTech was ranked 4th on the list, which is No. 1 among young universities established after 1988. On September 12th, 2019, Times Higher Education (THE) released its THE World University Rankings 2020, with Southern University of Science and Technology maintaining its top ten ranking in mainland China, ranking equal ninth in mainland China and between 301st and 350th in the world; specifically, SUSTech maintains the highest score in terms of citation among all universities in mainland China, and has maintained a top three position in international outlook across mainland China.

About MSE

Founded in July 2013, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is one of the first batch of departments established by SUSTech. In 2019, the Materials Science at SUSTech was ranked among top 5.8‰ In the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database,the Material Science and Engineering program was approved as a  provincial first-class undergraduate program.

The department has 28 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members, with a plan to grow into a size of 40 faculty in the next few years. The department has established a high-level, international, and well-structured team of faculty, including one Fellow from the Canadian Academy of Engineering and Royal Society of Canada (FRSC), one Laureate of the National Nature Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, five National Special experts, and seven National Special experts (youth projects).

The department has about 120 undergraduate students and over 200 graduate students. The MSE program aims to equip students with knowledge, methods and tools for engaging in the frontier research and development of new materials. In addition to education of science and engineering knowledge, the MSE program also puts an emphasis on cultivating students with intuition of innovation, spirit of team work, and skills of leadership.

The department engages in a broad scope of advanced materials research, including electronic information materials, energy and environmental materials, biological and medical materials, functional materials, as well as advanced materials processing and manufacturing.

The MSE program at SUSTech plays a leading role in the frontiers of materials research; the national strategic development plan in materials; and the R&D needs of local industries in the Pearl River Delta and Shenzhen municipality.

The department has undertaken 184 national, provincial, and municipal scientific research projects and published more than 900 papers in well-known international journals, applied for 323 patents, held 450 academic lectures, and organized 30 large-scale educational seminars. The department has successfully incubated 9 high-tech enterprises using technology investment and the establishment of joint laboratories.
