Established Professor of Engineering
Applications are invited from suitable qualified candidates for a new post as Established Professor of Engineering at NUI Galway in Engineering under the Senior Academic Leadership Initiative (SALI) Call 2019, in line with the requirements set out in the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Call document https://hea.ie/funding-calls/senior-academic-leadership-initiative/.
This SALI Programme is managed by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills (DES). Following a competitive process based on an annual Call for applications from higher education institutions (HEIs), the HEA approved 2 new and additional senior academic leadership posts for our institution in the areas of Engineering and Older Adult Health to assist in accelerating gender balance at senior levels.
The Senior Academic Leadership Initiative aims to help achieve equality of outcome in the higher education sector. New and additional senior academic leadership posts have been funded in areas where:
• there is clear evidence of significant gender under-representation;
• where this appointment will have significant impact within the faculty/department/functional unit and the HEI;
• where they would be a proportionate and effective means to achieve accelerated and sustainable change within an institution.
These posts are new and additional to the sector, i.e. they are in addition to the existing Employment Control Framework (ECF), and they will be funded through new and additional funding provided specifically to help progress gender balance among academic staff at senior levels.
The key objective of this Initiative is principally to attract outstanding female applicants both from within the sectors currently and internationally. The Initiative will also assist in increasing the number of women involved in the decision-making processes in the institutions, as advocated in the EU Commission Strategy on Promoting Equality in Decision Making.
In securing the Established Professor of Engineering post under this initiative, our institution has demonstrated our commitment to gender equality. Our institution has also demonstrated plans for future developments in this area and has outlined the organisational and cultural initiatives in place to support the newly appointed staff.
The Established Professor of Engineering at NUI Galway will be located within the School of Engineering and College of Science and Engineering. The School of Engineering brings together the Disciplines of Biomedical Engineering, Mechancial Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
Our vision for this professorship is that the appointee will be an internationally leading academic with an excellent research profile and a demonstrable capacity for leadership.
The Established Professor of Engineering will build on a demonstrated track record of research achievement at an international level to establish a world-class research and innovation programme in Engineering at NUI Galway, and to attract substantial R&D funding, working with colleagues across the University’s Schools, Colleges and Research Institutes. The Professor of Engineering will provide leadership in strategy development and implementation, through leadership roles and opportunities within the School and College.
In terms of teaching, the Professor of Engineering will contribute actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, student project supervision, and administration activities.
The appointee will demonstrate leadership in the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) activities of the School and NUI Galway, building on the achievements of NUI Galway already in this domain, with a particular focus on initiatives to increase female representation in both the student and staff cohort in Engineering.
The research and teaching programmes of the School of Engineering fully align with the strategic research and associated research-informed teaching aims of NUI Galway, in particular in the following thematic areas (NUI Galway Strategy 2020-2025):
• Improving health and wellbeing;
• Realising potential through data and enabling technologies;
• Sustaining our planet and people.
Thus, we are seeking applications from academics with expertise in areas of engineering that align with one or more of these thematic areas. Expertise in biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering is particularly welcome. While the appointment will be in the School of Engineering, the Professor will be aligned with one of the four Disciplines, based on their academic expertise.
An attractive start-up package will be offered to the successful candidate. To facilitate the establishment of their research activities at NUI Galway, and to develop their activities in the EDI domain, the Professor of Engineering will have no teaching duties in the first year of appointment, with an incremental ramp-up in teaching to steady-state duties over subsequent years.
The successful applicant will be a permanent employee of NUI Galway, under our standard terms and conditions.
