About the team/job
EMBL is committed to raising awareness of issues facing women, men and minority groups in science. We want to address and challenge preconceptions, and inspire staff of all backgrounds at different stages in their scientific careers, removing impediments to equality and career progression.
As a consequence of this commitment to equality and diversity, EMBL-EBI is looking for an Equality and Diversity Officer to join its External Relations team to continue the excellent work begun by the previous incumbent to this role. We are seeking somebody who will take a strategic approach to developing and embedding policies and practices that will improve diversity, equality and gender balance at the Institute.
This is a part-time opportunity (three full days per week) to work closely with leadership and staff at Hinxton, EMBL in Heidelberg, Genome Campus colleagues from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and other stakeholders in the fields of gender and diversity.
The post holder will report regularly to EMBL’s Equality and Diversity Committee (EDC) and support its Chair, along with another Equality and Diversity Officer based in Heidelberg.
This role is tasked with collecting and analysing data to inform the development and delivery of an equality and diversity action plan that will ensure EMBL-EBI makes strides towards achieving greater diversity and career equality for all staff, irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or disability.
EMBL-EBI is a partner in the Wellcome Genome Campus Equality and Diversity initiative, established in 2011 and led by the Wellcome Sanger Institute. This programme offers diverse events to promote awareness of the issues surrounding equality and diversity in science careers. The incumbent will be active in working on aspects of the administration and delivery of this programme. Additionally, the incumbent will represent EMBL-EBI on EMBL’s Equality and Diversity Committee and other external groups and committees where appropriate.
Alongside development of strategic equality and diversity plans, one of the key tasks will be to continue to gather, analyse and report annual statistical data at EMBL-EBI pertaining to equality and diversity.

We will look to the incumbent for guidance and direction to our leadership in all matters related to equality and diversity.

You will be an enthusiastic self-starter, working closely with the HR Team on data and statistics, and able to both chair and administer meetings.
