Doctoral Candidate (PhD Student) in Materials Science - Mechanical Behavior of Nanocomposites

Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH)

Hamburg, Germany

At the Institute of Advanced Ceramics of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) we are looking for a motivated PhD student (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter – m/w/d) for a DFG project on the Mechanical Behavior of Novel Nanoarchitected Composite Materials. The focus is supercrystalline nanocomposites, to be explored via nano-micro-mechanical studies and analytical modeling approaches.

The Hamburg University of Technology is a rising research hub in the field of Advanced Materials, thanks to broad interdisciplinary projects such as the Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich, SFB) 986 on Tailor-Made Multi-Scale Materials Systems. This DFG project will be conducted in close cooperation with the SFB 986, benefit from an outstanding research infrastructure, and lead to important advances in the development of novel nanostructured materials systems.

Your tasks

  • Characterization and fundamental understanding of the mechanical properties of supercrystalline nanocomposites
  • Performing experimental micromechanical tests and nanostructure observation and analysis
  • Deriving the materials’ constitutive behavior and identifying the role played by material imperfections
  • Inferring and formulating structure-properties-processing interrelations for these new kinds of materials

Your profile

  • University degree, in particular in Material Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or similar subjects
  • Pre-existing knowledge of mechanical behavior of materials (concepts of crystalline materials, materials defects, constitutive laws)
  • Interest in experimental work and theoretical material models
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team
  • Very good communication and organizational skills, very good knowledge of English

What we offer

  • We offer you the opportunity of obtaining a doctorate (PhD title)
  • Vibrant international and interdisciplinary work environment in Hamburg’s rising materials research hub
  • Attendance at national and international conferences and workshops
  • Research stays and cooperation with international partners
  • An exceptional research infrastructure with state-of-the-art facilities
