Imperial College London, one of the world’s most important centres for research and teaching in the natural and physical sciences, medicine, engineering, and business, seeks a new Director of the MRC (Medical Research Council) Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection (CMBI).

The Director will hold the post of Chair in Microbiology in the Department of Infectious Disease, in the Faculty of Medicine or in the Department of Life Sciences, in the Faculty of Natural Sciences as appropriate for their scientific focus.

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional scientist (either clinical or non-clinical) to provide academic and research leadership of the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection (CMBI), as a Professor within either the Department of Infectious Disease of the Faculty of Medicine or Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

The CMBI has a unique focus on pathogenesis of, and immunity to, disease-causing bacteria. It represents the largest grouping of scientists and clinicians in the UK working on bacterial infection biology. The overall goals of the CMBI are to understand molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial infection and immunity, and to translate this information into novel strategies for preventing and treating disease. 

The CMBI brings together researchers from across the Faculties of Medicine and Natural Sciences and we welcome applicants whose natural home would be within either Faculty. The previous Director, Professor David Holden, Regius Professor in Infectious Disease, has stepped down from the CMBI lead, and we are seeking a person with vision to guide the Centre into a new phase that capitalizes on its strengths whilst developing expertise to address the challenges from pathogenic bacteria in future decades.

To be a suitable applicant for this role, you will have a sustained international reputation based on an extensive track record of research in the area of microbiology and/or infectious disease biology and a significant broader impact, for example through Departmental leadership or influence on policy.

If you are a clinician, you will have an honorary contract with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. As a clinician, you will have the appropriate UK clinical specialist registration, or will be eligible for registration within six months of interview and will fulfil the requisite clinical checks.

The appointment will be made on an open-ended basis, either at clinical or non-clinical level, depending on qualifications and experience.
