Director of the Information Technology Center
Starting date: October 1st, 2020.
The University of Cologne is seeking the Director of the Information Technology Center. The position is associated with a full professorship (W3), preferably in the Department of Mathematics or Computer Science. The recruitment requirements apply in accordance with Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). The IT Center (currently Regional Computing Center Cologne) is a central institution of the University of Cologne, which provides basic IT services for research, teaching and administration. It will also play a key role in the university’s digital transformation strategy.
The Director will lead and manage the IT Center, including the existing infrastructure for high-performance computing (HPC level 2: CHEOPS2).
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate, and will have a proven track record of outstanding scientific qualification in a relevant field such as computer science, mathematics or interdisciplinary research related to computer science. We wish to appoint a candidate whose research interests involve one or more of the following areas:
- Scientific high-performance computing
- Numerical simulation and visualization
- Parallel algorithms and their implementation
- Information processing of big data
- Innovative computer architectures
It is expected that the successful applicant will have management experience of large university institutions, as well as a proven track record of successful funding acquisition, desirably for IT infrastructure.
The Director will be supported by an Executive Manager, whose responsibilities are operation and management of service- and administration-related IT tasks.
The University of Cologne will considerably expand the Department of Computer Science, Simulation and Scientific Computing. Furthermore, it will reorganize its IT landscape, with the aim of strengthening digital teaching and digital administrative structures. The Director is expected to actively support those processes.
The University of Cologne has identified strengthening of data science and machine learning as one of its overarching strategic goals. It expects the Director of the IT Center to essentially contribute to, plan and develop the necessary infrastructural measures. Future cooperation with the Center for Data and Simulation Science is a prerequisite.
