About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role

We now have a new opportunity for a Data Analysis Scientist to develop and support cutting-edge data analysis methods for Crystallography and Diffraction.

You will work closely with software developers and scientists to identify, define and prioritise their requirements, and develop the software required for scientific data reduction and analysis and ensure its timely implementation.

The four Diamond Crystallography Science Group beamlines employ various X-ray scattering and diffraction techniques to study structural properties of powder and single crystal materials at ambient and different nonambient conditions including temperature, pressure and gas environments. These powerful facilities are used by an international community of scientists from a wide range of disciplines, from Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Earth and Materials to Life Sciences. Important research fields include in situ studies of batteries and catalysts, synthesis of new materials as well as structural studies at extreme temperature and/or pressure conditions. These different techniques require analysis using specialised software tools to extract the relevant chemical and structural information from the sample.

Through a combination of collaboration and development, you will help refine existing data analysis methods and introduce new methods to enable scientists to process and visualise large volumes of multidimensional data, apply complex mathematical fitting or theoretical models to their results and capture experimental information.

You will help drive development, automation and information management further and to exploit arising opportunities within our facility.

You will work as part of an experienced team of researchers, adding to the team’s extensive experience in experimental method development, data collection, data processing and analysis. Your experience and underlying knowledge will be an indispensable asset to ensure further development of the capabilities of Diamond instruments.

This role will provide the opportunity for you to develop and further hone your expertise within an internationally renowned multidisciplinary environment, driven by the pursuit of scientific excellence.

About You

You will hold a first degree in a STEM subject, along with a relevant postgraduate degree, or significant equivalent experience.

You will have good working knowledge of modern programming languages such as Java, C++ or Python, ideally with practical experience of the full software development lifecycle, including experience with software development frameworks and applications such as Eclipse.

  • Further experience and knowledge in the following areas is also required:
  • Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction and/or X-ray Pair Distribution Function (or closely related) experiments and data interpretation.
  • Advanced mathematics and/or software engineering techniques for application development.
  • Data management, describing data and exploiting databases for scientific work.

The ability to think creatively to design and deliver innovative software for the solutions we provide to enable science is crucial, as is the passion to learn.

Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills are required to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment, interacting with scientists and software engineers.
