The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful HPC infrastructures in Europe, enabling scientists and engineers to solve highly complex problems by simulations. Simulation and Data Laboratories (Simlabs) provide the interface between domain-specific research and JSC’s supercomputing infrastructure. They offer high level support and conduct interdisciplinary research to solve challenges which require cooperation between domain scientists and the JSC HPC experts. The SimLab Climate Science and the SimLab Terrestrial Systems focus is on high-performance scientific computing in the geosciences. In collaboration with other research units at Forschungszentrum Jülich, regional universities, and other Helmholtz research centers they contribute to an improved understanding and enhanced prediction capabilities of geophysical, hydrological, meteorological and bio-geochemical processes in the Earth system. The work of the SimLabs is embedded in the activities of the Helmholtz Earth System Modeling Advanced Capacity project and the Centre for High Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems in the Geoverbund ABC/J . The SimLabs are lead partners of the recently funded Pilotlab Exascale Earth System Modelling initiative, which seeks to explore novel IT concepts and solutions to enable Earth System Model simulations on future exascale supercomputer architectures.

Your Job:

  • Exploration of innovative software technologies for the development and extension of next generation Earth system models

  • Development of software solutions to allow adaptation of Earth system model components to and optimization on Exascale hardware technologies, especially massively parallel GPU modules

  • Set-up and implementation of test scenarios to evaluate new software concepts in different application fields (e.g., atmospheric chemistry or subsurface water flow)

Your Profile:

  • University degree in either computer science, applied mathematics or physics
  • a PhD degree and relevant scientific publications are an advantage
  • Proven experience with MPI and OpenMP in Fortran or C/C++ on HPC systems
