DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.

The IT group at the DESY site in Zeuthen near Berlin is responsible for the institute’s IT infrastructure. In addition, the group also supports the projects of the scientific groups.

The position

Design and implement software modules for the CTA Medium-Size Telescope Structure Control SystemDesign and implement software modules for the CTA Resource Manager and Central Control SystemParticipate in the integration and testing of CTA software systems in the computing infrastructure of DESY in ZeuthenParticipate in the whole life cycle of CTA Array Control and Data Acquisition software system development


Completed scientific higher education in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or mathematics or equivalent knowledgeExperience and excellent knowledge in operating systems (in particular Linux) including proficiency in shell scripting, experience in real-time systems would be appreciatedExcellent skills in object-oriented programming (e.g. C++, Java, Python) and data structures, experience in functional programming is appreciatedExperience in SQL/NoSQL database developmentGood command of the OPC UA platform are highly appreciatedGood knowledge in test driven development, continuous integration, test automation and distributed version managementWillingness to participate in expert and working meetings and conferences abroad, as well as occasionally in software commissioning campaigns in the CTA sites in Chile and the Canary IslandsGood knowledge of English

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties.
