The research initiative “Integrity of nuclear waste repository systems – Cross-scale system understanding and analysis” (iCross) funded by the Helmholtz Association and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will establish a multidisciplinary scientific entity with high international visibility providing a unique research platform to solve urgent questions related to the future safe disposal of radioactive waste. It integrates the internationally renowned multidisciplinary research activities of FZJ, KIT and HZDR within the Helmholtz program NUSAFE on radio/geo/biochemistry with the expertise of GFZ and UFZ on Earth system analysis, understanding and simulation. UFZ activities within this joint initiative are focussed on the modelling and scientific software development for the analysis of nuclear waste repository systems across scales. To strengthen the existing expertise in modelling of thermo-hydro-mechanical/chemical-microbiological (THM/CB) coupled processes in fractured porous media in the Department of Environmental Informatics, we offer the following vacancy at the earliest possible date:

Computational Geochemistry Scientist (m/f/x)

Working time: 100 % (39 hours per week), limited to 3 years

Your tasks:

  • Extending the computational multiphysics framework OpenGeoSys (OGS) to efficient chemistry computations for porous media applications based on iPhreeqC and GEM interfaces
  • Verifying and benchmarking the new OGS-6 framework against existing OGS-5 solutions for thermo-hydro-mechanical/chemical (THM/C) simulations
  • Improving computational performance of reactive transport modelling (RTM) applications by using High-Performance-Computing methods (in particular including GPU architectures)
  • Supporting the development of a series of applications for radionuclide migration in cement, bentonite, clay, and crystalline rocks
  • Supporting third-party funded projects with your expertise in computational geochemistry (e.g. EU projects)

Your profile:

  • Scientific education (Diploma, Master or PhD degree) in the field of applied mathematics, mechanical engineering / chemistry, or computer science
  • Documented expertise in computational geochemistry, reactive transport modelling, or stochastic methods for process analysis
  • Proven experience in performing computational analyses using finite element or more advanced numerical methods of relevance, as well as in their application to coupled porous media processes in a multi-physics / chemistry context
  • Advanced programming skills in C/C++ are required
  • Strong self-motivation and team work capability in a scientific software development group, interest in multi-disciplinary research, and the ability to communicate with experimental project partners
  • Experience in publishing and presenting scientific results
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English
