St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is looking for a Computational Engineer to contribute to the design, development, and implementation of innovative high-performance software systems to support its basic research programs. The successful candidate is communicative and passionate about science, programming and numerical methods, with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: full-stack software development, scientific data management, machine learning, large-scale data analysis, computer graphics, NoSQL databases, GPUs and HPC. You will join a dynamic team with Dr. Khaled Khairy in the Center for Bioimage Informatics. She/He is expected to work at the interface of Software Engineering, Image Processing, Computer Vision and Machine Learning. Experience in enterprise architectures, scientific data visualization, computer graphics, game design and/or deep learning is a plus.

The successful candidate will work as part of an international team of scientists, addressing some of the most pressing questions in biology, to design and implement software systems that advance cutting edge research. Examples of projects to support include bioimage analysis, animal trackers, virtual reality environments, new imaging technologies, cloud-computing and multi-dimensional data visualization. The position is focused on software development and data management in support of ongoing and new projects. The Computational Engineer is also expected to act as project lead to coordinate and standardize image analysis pipeline management, image and meta-data management, synergize with ongoing projects, keep up-to-date with latest relevant software and hardware architectures, and to participate in dissemination of technical knowledge through formal reports, workshops, hackathons and seminars.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven skill programming in two or more of the following: JAVA, Python, C/C++, R, Matlab. Code project examples are expected to be available on GitHub or other code repositories.
  • Proven skill developing software for analysis and visualization of scientific data.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and willingness to lend a hand with projects.
  • Good grasp of HPC and GPU technologies is a plus.
  • Exposure to NoSQL technologies a plus; for example, MongoDB and Neo4J.
  • Exposure to deep learning frameworks and a willingness to learn about deep learning a plus.        


  1. Design, development and maintenance of full-stack image data management software services for image acquisition systems across the institute. This includes set up and maintenance of existing software, development of new services when needed, facilitating data flow from image acquisition systems to image databases, developing consistent APIs for data access, managing multi-threaded access from HPC and other hardware, and consulting with and training image analysis staff. Software developed will be leveraged across multiple scientific research groups, and is expected to adhere to highest standards of Software Engineering and best design practices, version control, testing, documentation and innovation pacing.
  2.  Design and development of image processing workflow management systems, including scale-up to utilize hybrid hardware systems (HPC, Cloud and local workstations). Synergize with existing efforts and provide training of both CBI and research staff for proper access and utilization of resources.
  3.  The candidate will be proactive and initiate discussions with researchers and colleagues to understand the thrust of their domain science, identify algorithmic and software solutions relevant to ongoing scientific projects, and work collaboratively to develop software solutions where appropriate. The candidate will work closely with other data scientists to prioritize tasks.
  4.  Excellent communication with scientists is a must. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills and is expected to provide regular high quality scientific presentations of their work to scientists, collaborators and team members. She/he is expected to maintain a positive working relationship with scientific staff and other groups. 

Minimum Education

  • Master’s Degree in Computational Science, Computational Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related field is required.
  • A Doctorate in Computational Science, Computational Mathematics, Computer Engineering or Computer Science with experience in high performance computing, image processing and/or scientific visualization is preferred.

Minimum Experience

  • Two (2) years of scientific computing and/or algorithm/application development experience in a scientific research environment is required.
  • Experience in design and implementation of the full software stack and Java enterprise systems preferred.
  • Experience in using established application server platforms, designing associated services and REST APIs preferred.
  • Experience in SQL and non-SQL databases preferred.
  • Experience in programming with Java and Python preferred.
  • Experience in scientific computing and scientific data visualization is preferred.
  • Experience in scientific computer code optimization and evaluation in an HPC environment is preferred.
  • Experience in working with big data is preferred.
  • Compensated internship and/or research assistantship experience in high performance computing, image processing, scientific programming and/or computational algorithm/methodology development during Master’s degree and/or Doctorate program will be counted toward required experience.
