American Board of Pediatrics

Competency-Based Medical Education Leader

Chapel Hill, NC

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) seeks a highly respected and accomplished pediatrician dedicated to improving competency-based medical education (CBME) and trainee assessment in the five core competencies beyond medical knowledge.

The new CBME leader will advance the ABP mission through research, innovation, and collaboration with the medical education community. A major purpose of the research is to strengthen the evidence for making summative decisions regarding practice readiness of trainees, which is a prerequisite for taking the initial general pediatrics (GP) certification examination. The assurance that the ABP provides to the public about the competence of newly graduated trainees is only as good as the evidence upon which it is based, creating a critical role for the next leader of CBME at the ABP.

The new leader of CBME will build on the progress made over the last nine years to establish and define the role of the ABP in working with our community to: 1) address gaps in graduate medical education (GME) and trainee assessment and 2) connect the education-training-practice continuum, which is foundational to improving learning and assessment with the goal of achieving better health outcomes for children. This position presents the new CBME leader with the opportunity to create a vision for the future and work with both internal and external colleagues to engage in the research and change effort needed to guide the implementation of competency-based programs of assessment, to oversee and monitor the implementation, and to study the outcomes of implementation. While the new CBME leader will be responsible for guiding this work, it is expected that this will involve a grassroots effort within the pediatrics community, as buy-in will be particularly important to advancing the field.

The new leader of CBME will join the ABP senior management team (SMT), reporting to and working closely with the President and CEO. S/he will participate in all strategic planning and important decision-making for the organization.
