Commissioning Editor – CABI Agriculture and Bioscience

Freelance – fixed term

The Commissioning Editor role is a fantastic opportunity for someone excited about the impact of open research in agriculture to work on the launch of CABI Agriculture and Bioscience, a new, broad scope journal in the field, owned by CABI. You will be involved in acquiring high quality articles and thematic series for the journal, tracking their submission and publication, and supporting the Editor-in-Chief and Section Editors of the journal to drive submissions from around the world.


-Plan and drive the commissioning of content by proactively researching and suggesting topics and inviting authors.

-Work with Journal Development Editors at BMC, external academic editors and Editorial Board Members to obtain suggestions of topics and authors for commissioned conten

-Build knowledge of the field and the relevant scientific communities to identify commissioning opportunities. This will involve engaging with senior scientists and obtaining their advice, and possibly the commissioning team at CABI

-Monitor and track progress of submitted and commissioned content across the sections of the journal; follow up with Editors and Authors to ensure deadlines are met

-Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the Editor-in-Chief, the Editorial Board, and the CABI and BMC teams supporting publication of the journal

-Plan and prioritise workload according to the needs of the journal Editor-in-Chief and Section Editors, and growth areas of research

Experience, skills and qualifications


-Educated to post-graduate level in a life science or biomedical science discipline related to agriculture
-Keen interest in open access publishing
-Proven knowledge of publishing process and related matters
-Proven administrative skills
-Excellent organisational skills
-Excellent influencing skills
-Excellent critical appraisal and problem solving skills
-Takes ownership to drive and complete tasks
-Proven ability to meet deadlines consistently
-Ability to adapt quickly to change
-Strong attention to detail/high accuracy
-Proven high level of computer literacy
-Able to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels


-Previous experience working in the publishing industry
-Previous experience of content acquisition
