As the world, and Australia, is faced with increasingly complex challenges and opportunities, it is imperative that the Australian Government has access to the highest calibre, independent, and authoritative scientific advice available. The sciences, including the natural, physical and life sciences, medical and health sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology-related disciplines are also an increasingly important job creation driver for our future economy.
The Federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources is seeking to appoint a new Chief Scientist of Australia. A high-profile position representing the country and the scientific fields on an international scale, the primary purpose of the role is to provide high level, independent advice to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, and other Ministers on matters relating to science, technology and innovation. At the same time, the Chief Scientist is a champion of science and research to the community and government.
In addition, the Chief Scientist is the Executive Officer of the National Science and Technology Council which aims to identify challenges and opportunities for Australia that can be addressed through science; while also holding a number of ex-officio roles at the discretion of the government.
Charged with advising on a range of scientific matters, Australia’s next Chief Scientist will be a highly credentialled and influential individual, who has gained research and leadership skills within highly respected global institutions spanning academia and industry. The successful candidate will have strong commercial acumen, as well as an understanding of working with, and in support of, government. An understanding of the requirements of leaders in a public sector context, and proven communication and stakeholder management skills will also be required.
