The Wake Forest School of Medicine is seeking a national leader as our new Chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. Physiology and Pharmacology includes 23 faculty, 12 postdoctoral fellows, 39 graduate students and 43 staff with a strong research focus on the pathophysiological effects and neurobiology of alcohol and substance use disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and behavioral/molecular pharmacology. This highly collaborative and translational department conducts rodent, non-human primate, and human research, spanning molecular, cellular, and systems level analyses with collaborators across the medical school and nationally. Physiology and Pharmacology has more than $20 million in direct, extramural funding and is home to three NIH centers aligned with research foci. These Centers reflect the highly collaborative, dynamic, and innovative environment of this Department with marked strengths in translational neuroscience research. The Department also has a strong commitment to graduate, post-graduate and junior faculty training exemplified by training grants funded by NIDA, NIAAA, NIGMS, PRIME, as well as numerous NRSA F31/F32 training fellowships.
Key responsibilities and qualifications required to maintain and grow this exceptional Department include, but are not limited to:
· Provide strategic leadership for efforts to grow collaborations with colleagues, centers and departments across the entire health system and beyond
· Foster innovation and scientific discovery that builds on, and expands, existing strengths in the neural basis of substance use disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and behavioral/molecular pharmacology
· Further the development of emerging research opportunities in human and preclinical behavioral research, such as opioid addiction, neurological, and neuropsychiatric diseases
· Promote excellence in education and mentoring at all ranks
· Nurture professional growth, attract talented recruits, and develop a robust leadership pipeline
· Conduct high-impact, collaborative research
· Serve as a national leader and spokesperson for the Department
· Dynamic, highly collaborative personality with an ability to provide inspired leadership
· Active, independent, and well-funded research portfolio
· Research that is complementary to departmental strengths in translational neurophysiology and neuroscience
· An articulate and effective advocate for the Department
· Strong commitment to training graduate, post-graduate and junior investigators
· Commitment and experience in promoting diversity among faculty and staff
· Advanced degree (PhD and/or MD) at the rank of Professor (or equivalent).
· Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in an academic environment.
· Experience in managing and conducting team-oriented research and developing early-career scientists
