The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), located in Milwaukee, WI, invites applications and nominations for a strategic and collaborative leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. The successful candidate will grow a strong research enterprise built around cellular signal transduction in cancer, neuroscience and cardiovascular biology. The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has a strong record of research excellence, exemplary teaching, translational collaboration and entrepreneurial drive that is reflected through the achievements of their faculty and trainees. The next Chair will join a cadre of newly hired basic science chairs advancing the MCW research mission and will foster collaborations across the school by engaging with other Departments, Centers, the School of Pharmacy, and external collaborators.
The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is home to 23 faculty, 21 staff, 10 PhD students and several postdoctoral fellows, sits within the School of Medicine, and serves the school through research and educational excellence. The Department has a broad research portfolio with over $5 million in extramural funding and is home to a shared mass spectrometry facility, a Drug Discovery Center, and the newly created Center for Disease Prevention Research. Faculty also play active roles in the Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Center, and Neuroscience Research Center. The Department is also responsible for teaching a Principals of Drug Action course to first year medical students and contributing to systems-based instruction to second-year medical students.
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine/Provost, the next Chair will continue to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion and have an appreciation for the interconnectivity of basic and clinical research. The Chair will champion innovation and collaboration and will serve as an external representative for both the Department and MCW. The next Chair will have the opportunity to shape the future of the department, with multiple recruitment opportunities and a planned remodeling of lab space. The Chair will also oversee curricular content of the graduate program and Pharmacology-related topics in the School of Medicine curriculum. The Chair will also work to increase enrollment of a high caliber of graduate students into the Pharmacology PhD program. Candidates must have a terminal degree from an accredited institution, meet the requirements of a tenured full professor, and have a record of success in building cohesive, modern research programs.
