The BSL-3 Ag Biosafety Professional is responsible for: Serving as an Associate Biological Safety Officer and conducting risk assessments of proposed animal and arthropod research at TAMU, including the Global Health Research Complex; implementing appropriate mitigations for identified risks; providing general and specialized training to personnel; ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements regarding the possession and use of biohazardous agents; responding to incidents involving biological agents; and serving as an Alternate Responsible Official for the TAMU Select Agent Program. What you need to know

This position is restricted by the Patriot Act. This position or the job duties performed involve use of restricted items, software or technology covered by Export Controls regulations. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, immunology, virology, animal science or other similar relevant field of study or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six (6) years of related experience serving as a biosafety professional, biological laboratory scientist, or biological laboratory technician including at least one (1) year of experience working with large animal models (e.g. pigs, goats, cattle).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Biological Safety. Must be familiar with the most current editions of the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic DNA Molecules, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, and federal Select Agents Regulations.
  • Ability to keep accurate records. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • Ability to obtain DOJ security clearance to enter Select Agent laboratories and participate in a Personnel Suitability Program Ability to enter and work in biosafety level -2 and -3 laboratories.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection.
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and lift or move medium weight objects. Ability to respond to emergency call during off duty hours.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD, DVM) in a relevant field.
  • Prior experience working in a BSL-3 Ag or BSL-4 Ag facility. Prior experience with a variety of large animal models of infection, including deer, bison, and camels.
  • Prior experience working with Tier 1 select agents. Prior experience with prion diseases. Prior experience as an Alternate Responsible Official.
  • Prior experience performing complex risk assessments. Training experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, schematic diagrams, and other technical reference documents.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform or assist with whole-room decontamination procedures.
  • Personal or professional experience in working with people of diverse backgrounds. Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
